The problem
African tech companies complain of a talent shortage while global firms poach the seniors; meanwhile millions of young Nigerians hold certificates but no practical skills. Universities teach theory, foreign bootcamps cost more than a year’s salary, and self-taught learners graduate with no credential an employer recognizes.
How it works
Founded by Adewale Yusuf, Akintunde Sultan, and Opeyemi Awoyemi, AltSchool Africa runs as an alternative online school: students pay a small application fee (about $24 / ₦10,000), train for 9–12 months in tracks including Software Engineering, Data, Product, Creative Economy, and Business, and receive a diploma certificate. Students without a laptop get one via soft loans, and tuition is paid as a percentage of salary over an agreed period once they earn — a BloomTech-style income-share model adapted for Africa. The school also connects learners to internships and jobs.
Pain points
Unaffordable upfront bootcamp fees, no laptop, and curricula disconnected from what hiring managers actually test for.
Business model
Small application fees plus income-linked graduate tuition, device financing, and — increasingly — bulk sponsored scholarships where partners like Binance and Bybit pay full tuition for hundreds of learners at a time.
Challenges
The promise lives or dies on placement rates in a volatile hiring market; collecting salary-linked tuition across countries is operationally heavy; and each mega-scholarship cohort strains mentoring quality and support.
Funding
- Raised: $1M pre-seed (February 2022) from Voltron Capital, Nestcoin, Pledges, and Odba VC plus angel investors including musician Ajebutter22, aimed at scaling across the continent.
