  1. The Bottleneck

    What was broken?

Thousands of West Bank olive-farming families were cut off from international markets, forced to sell their harvest through middlemen at commodity prices with no route to organic or fair-trade premiums.

  2. The Move

    Why it worked

Built the missing route to market itself: organised growers into the Palestine Fair Trade Association, certified them to USDA Organic and fair-trade standards, and sold finished, traceable oil to mainstream shelves abroad — returning premiums to the cooperatives.

  3. The Trap

    Battle scars

Harvest disruption from movement restrictions and grove access, keeping organic certification credible across 54 villages, and selling a premium product whose price must carry its social mission.

The problem

Olive trees cover the West Bank hillsides, but the families farming them had no way to reach foreign buyers: certification was out of reach for any single village, middlemen captured the margin, and some of the world’s oldest groves sold their oil as an anonymous commodity.

How it works

Founded by Jenin-raised anthropologist Nasser Abufarha, Canaan Palestine organised growers into the Palestine Fair Trade Association, built the systems for USDA Organic and fair-trade certification, and set up pressing and packing in Jenin. The company hand-picks indigenous landrace olives from 2,000+ family farms across 54 villages, cold-presses them at 28 degrees Celsius, and sells finished oil — the Jenin everyday bottle, the peppery Rumi, the delicate Nabali — alongside grains, spices, and preserves to mainstream distributors abroad.

Pain points

Stranded harvests with no export paperwork, organic certification designed for estates rather than villages, commodity buyers indifferent to origin, and farming communities watching young people leave the land.

Business model

Finished-goods margin: Canaan captures the bottling and branding premium that bulk oil never earns, sells wholesale and online, and routes fair-trade social premiums back to producer collectives for community investment.

Challenges

Keeping certification audits clean across dozens of villages, moving harvests and finished goods through checkpoints and closures, and defending shelf space for a premium-priced oil against industrial Mediterranean brands.

Funding

  • Raised: undisclosed — a bootstrapped mission business grown on trade revenue rather than announced rounds.
  • Valuation: none disclosed.

Latest — May 2026

On 23 May 2026 the Palestine Museum US hosted a virtual screening of the feature documentary Land of Canaan (2026), followed by discussion with director Maggie Lemere and Canaan Palestine founder Nasser Abufarha — a sign of the brand’s continued international profile two decades after its founding.
