  1. The Bottleneck

    What was broken?

Koreans were among the world's most active crypto traders but lacked a deep, liquid, trusted domestic venue — trading on thin order books with frequent outages and security scares.

  2. The Move

    Why it worked

Launched in October 2017 with deep KRW order books and a clean mobile experience, Upbit scaled with the retail boom to become the country's default on-ramp, converting trading flow into a hugely profitable fee engine.

  3. The Trap

    Battle scars

Revenue is concentrated in cyclical trading fees; regulators keep tightening exchange oversight; and the pending Naver merger must integrate two very different cultures without losing traders to Bithumb.

The problem

Korea’s retail crypto frenzy ran ahead of its market structure: thin local order books, fragile smaller exchanges, and no trusted default venue where millions of first-time traders could buy and sell safely in won.

How it works

Dunamu launched Upbit in October 2017 with deep KRW pairs and a fast mobile app, then layered custody, wallets and blockchain infrastructure (including the Giwa chain) around the exchange. It secured Korea’s first virtual-asset service provider qualification in 2021, cementing its regulated-leader status.

Pain points

Illiquid pre-2017 domestic venues, hacks and freezes at smaller exchanges, and retail users navigating unclear compliance and tax treatment on their own.

Business model

Transaction fees on spot trading volume, with custody, infrastructure and partner services on top — a model that prints money in bull markets and compresses hard in downturns.

Challenges

Extreme dependence on trading-fee cycles, ever-tightening Korean exchange regulation and listing scrutiny, plus execution risk on the giant Naver merger —including keeping liquidity and users from drifting to Bithumb during integration.

Funding

  • Raised: no public primary raises on record; recent transactions are secondary stakes — Samsung affiliates agreed to buy 4% ($408M) and Hana Bank 6.55% (~$670M, May 2026), both at roughly a 15.3 trillion won implied valuation.
  • Valuation: $10.27B — Naver Financial’s agreed all-stock acquisition (15.13 trillion won, Nov 2025), issuing 2.54 Naver Financial shares per Dunamu share (Reuters).

Latest — May 2026

Hana Bank agreed to buy a 6.55% stake in Dunamu for about 1 trillion won (~$670M), becoming its fourth-largest shareholder, with joint plans around won-pegged stablecoins and blockchain-based finance — a bank-validation signal six months after Naver Financial’s $10.3B all-stock acquisition agreement, one of Asia’s largest fintech deals of 2025.
