  1. The Bottleneck

    What was broken?

Istanbul's 16 million residents are served by roughly 20,000 taxis, so getting across the city is slow, scarce, and expensive.

  2. The Move

    Why it worked

Started with shared e-scooters, then stacked ride-hailing (Marti TAG), taxis, and delivery onto one app — and listed on NYSE American in July 2023, the first Turkish company to go public that route.

  3. The Trap

    Battle scars

Ride-hailing regulation in Turkiye is still contested; shared micromobility unit economics are thin; public-market scrutiny punishes every unprofitable quarter.

The problem

Istanbul has about 16 million people and only around 20,000 taxis: hailing a cab is a lottery, traffic strangles bus schedules, and the last mile from the metro to home is usually on foot.

How it works

Marti runs a single mobility app: TAG ride-hailing matches riders with car and motorcycle drivers, a taxi-hailing layer sits alongside, and a fleet of rental e-mopeds, e-bikes, and e-scooters — tracked over Marti’s own IoT stack — covers short hops. Marti Kurye (launched October 2025) added same-hour parcel delivery, and a July 2026 multi-year partnership with Silicon Valley-based Tensor will put Level 4 autonomous vehicles on the platform in cities across Turkiye.

Pain points

Impossible taxi supply, unpredictable fares, no clean first/last-mile option, and intracity parcels that still move at van speed.

Business model

Commission per ride, per-minute rental fares on shared two-wheelers, and courier fees — all settled inside the app.

Challenges

TAG-style ride-hailing faces municipal pushback and demands for formal regulation; shared scooters need constant capex and rebalancing; and as an NYSE-listed company every quarter is judged — Marti reported its first positive adjusted EBITDA only in Q2 2026.

Funding

  • Raised: listed via SPAC merger with Galata Acquisition Corp. (closed 11 July 2023, trading as MRT on NYSE American); private raise amounts unverified (MISSING).
  • Valuation: MISSING.

Latest — July 2026

On 13 July 2026 Marti filed a 6-K announcing a multi-year strategic partnership with Tensor to purchase and deploy autonomous vehicles on its mobility platform across Turkiye — signed by CEO Oguz Alper Oktem, who rang the NYSE opening bell back in July 2023.
