The problem
Everyone reuses passwords, and attackers know it: stolen or phished credentials are still the most common way into company systems. IT teams at remote-first firms face hundreds of logins per employee, unmanaged shadow SaaS accounts, and developers pasting secrets into code — with no single place to see or control any of it.
How it works
1Password stores logins, passkeys, credit cards, and developer secrets in end-to-end encrypted vaults that sync across Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, Linux, and every major browser. Individuals and families get personal vaults and breach Watchtower alerts; teams and enterprises get shared vaults, role-based access, access reviews, device trust, SaaS discovery and management, and secrets automation for CI/CD pipelines. Co-founders Dave Teare, Roustem Karimov, Sara Teare, and Natalia Karimov started it in 2005 as AgileBits, bootstrapping for 14 years before taking outside capital.
Pain points
Password reuse across personal and work accounts, phishing kits that defeat weak MFA rollouts, IT teams blind to employee shadow logins, and engineering orgs leaking API keys through repos and pipelines.
Business model
Per-seat subscriptions — individual, family, team, and business/enterprise tiers — with expansion revenue from enterprise add-ons: privileged access, SaaS manager, device trust, and developer secrets management.
Challenges
Okta, Microsoft Entra, and free open-source rivals compress pricing power; the company must prove its AI-era enterprise bundle (device trust, SaaS spend management, privileged access) can carry growth from $400M ARR toward $1B without losing the simplicity consumers loved.
Funding

Latest — November 2025
1Password topped $400M in annual recurring revenue and set its sights on $1B, with growth attributed to enterprise demand for AI-era credential and access security (Tech Startups, November 2025).
