  1. The Bottleneck

    What was broken?

Buying and selling secondhand goods and everyday services across MENA runs on fragmented, desktop-era listings and word of mouth — with no single mobile-first marketplace SMEs and consumers trust at regional scale.

  2. The Move

    Why it worked

A mobile-first classifieds experience localised per country, spanning real estate, autos, jobs, and services, monetised through seller advertising products — reaching tens of millions of users SMEs rely on daily.

  3. The Trap

    Battle scars

Defending leadership in every one of 19 markets against deep-pocketed classifieds rivals, while shifting from ad-led revenue toward transactions without alienating the free-listing user base.

The problem

Across the Middle East and North Africa, secondhand trade and everyday services change hands through scattered social-media groups, legacy desktop listings, and word of mouth. Consumers have no single trusted mobile venue, and SMEs lack an affordable way to reach buyers beyond their own neighbourhood.

How it works

OpenSooq offers a mobile-first classifieds marketplace where users directly sell, trade, and purchase secondhand products and book day-to-day services. Categories span real estate, autos, electronics, furniture, and fashion alongside education, training, and home-repair services — with each of its 19 country markets served through a tailored localised approach.

Pain points

Fragmented listings with no price or seller transparency, social-group haggling with no transaction safety, and small sellers priced out of formal advertising channels.

Business model

Advertising economics on seller volume: premium listings that boost visibility, hosted shop pages giving sellers their own storefront, and banner ads — sold to the consumers and SMEs trading on the platform.

Challenges

Holding the No. 1 spot across 19 different markets while regional and global classifieds groups contest the Gulf; and evolving from advertising-led revenue into transactions capability without driving free listers away.

Funding

  • Raised: $24M (Jun 2021) led by the Saudi Jordanian Investment Fund (SJIF), with participation from existing investors FJ Labs and iMENA Group, earmarked for hiring 400 people in Jordan and the region, new user services, and new-market launches.

Latest — Jun 2021

In June 2021 OpenSooq announced the $24M round led by SJIF — the sovereign fund’s bet that backing a Jordanian technology company on the cusp of transformational growth supports Jordan’s position as a regional technology hub.
