The problem
Indonesia’s e-commerce boom scattered millions of sellers across thousands of islands, but parcels moved on slow, fragmented couriers with no fulfillment backbone — a small merchant in Sulawesi had no way to promise Jakarta-speed delivery.
How it works
Founded in 2014 by The Kim Hai under parent company Onstar Express, SiCepat expanded aggressively from 2018 with its SiCepat Ekspres last-mile subsidiary, then added fulfillment and warehouse management (HaiStar), air cargo (CKL Kargo), e-commerce enablers (Hera, Clodeo) and a joint venture with NFC Indonesia for electric delivery motorcycles — positioning as an end-to-end partner from online shop setup to doorstep delivery for MSMEs.
Pain points
Late and lost inter-island parcels, sellers storing stock at home for lack of warehouses, no delivery SLA a micro-merchant could afford, and marketplaces needing one logistics partner covering first mile to last mile.
Business model
Per-parcel courier fees on SiCepat Ekspres volumes, recurring fulfillment and warehousing contracts via HaiStar, air-cargo charges through CKL, plus enabler and software services sold to online sellers.
Challenges
The courier price war with J&T Express keeps per-parcel margins wafer-thin; when pandemic demand cooled, SiCepat was swept into Indonesia’s late-2022 retrenchment wave; and IPO ambitions — once framed around a $2B IDX listing — quietly faded as markets turned.
