  1. The Bottleneck

    What was broken?

Indonesian women could not trust that the cosmetics they bought — online or in markets — were authentic, original and safe, while genuine imported brands had almost no organised retail channel in the country.

  2. The Move

    Why it worked

Solved trust first with 100% authentic, curated brands, then wrapped commerce in content: the Soco review community and Beauty Journal media turn browsing into discovery, and offline O2O stores let customers try before they buy — a loop pure marketplaces could not copy.

  3. The Trap

    Battle scars

Omnichannel retail burns cash on stores and inventory; global giants (Sephora) and Shopee/Tokopedia beauty aisles undercut on price and reach; and Vietnam expansion demands local brand curation from scratch.

The problem

Before Sociolla, buying cosmetics in Indonesia meant gambling: markets and generic online sellers mixed counterfeits with originals, genuine imported brands had barely any organised distribution, and shoppers outside Jakarta malls simply could not find them.

How it works

Founded in 2015 by Chrisanti Indiana, Christopher Madiam and John Rasjid, Social Bella started Sociolla as a beauty-only e-commerce portal guaranteeing authentic products. It grew into an ecosystem: the Sociolla shop, the Soco review community where users share experiences and videos, the Beauty Journal publication, and O2O concept stores. By 2018 the three online properties had logged 20.2 million visitors, and the company kept expanding the store footprint at home while entering Vietnam.

Pain points

Fake cosmetics of unknown safety, no trustworthy shade or skin-type guidance, and authentic brands unreachable beyond big-city malls.

Business model

Retail margin on thousands of curated SKUs plus exclusive brand distribution, in-store beauty services, and marketing services that sell brands access to Sociolla’s audience and O2O funnel.

Challenges

Dozens of physical stores tie up capital in rent and inventory; Sephora and the Shopee/Tokopedia beauty aisles compete brutally on price and assortment; and each new market needs its own brand mix and community flywheel.

Funding

  • Raised: $40M Series D co-anchored by EV Growth and Temasek with Jungle Ventures, Pavilion Capital and EDBI, taking disclosed funding to $52M (AsiaTechDaily); earlier a $12M Series C led by EV Growth, YJ Capital and Sinar Mas Digital Ventures. L Catterton later joined as a strategic shareholder with a board seat (Global Cosmetics News, May 2022).
  • Valuation: private company — no citable valuation to report.

Latest — May 2022

L Catterton announced a strategic investment in Social Bella International — its first-ever investment in Indonesia — joining the board to back Sociolla’s push to new Gen-Z and Millennial consumers in Indonesia and Vietnam across its Sociolla, Soco, Beauty Journal, Lilla and SDI platforms.
