The problem
Travelling across Southeast Asia’s archipelagos meant piecing together flights, ferries, hotels and activities across dozens of sites and offline agents — with local payment methods unsupported and rebooking a nightmare when plans changed.
How it works
Co-founded in 2012 by Ferry Unardi — who started it to simplify finding flights between the US and his Indonesian home while at Harvard Business School — Traveloka began as a travel metasearch site and grew into a lifestyle super-app with the largest accommodation inventory in Southeast Asia and 40 million monthly users (Tatler Asia). Backed by GIC, the Qatar Investment Authority and Expedia, it now sells flights, hotels, trains, experiences and financial services across the region (Digital in Asia, Jun 2026). In September 2022 it secured $300M in financing from the Indonesia Investment Authority, BlackRock, Allianz Global Investors and Orion Capital Asia (Skift).
Pain points
Scattered booking across islands and carriers, opaque pricing and refund policies, travellers without access to trip credit, and suppliers invisible to online demand.
Business model
Supplier commissions on every booking category, fees from pay-later and insurance products, and payments income.
Challenges
Regional heavyweights Agoda (Booking Holdings) and a soon-to-list Klook squeeze margins; the pandemic nearly killed the business once, so investors will demand durable profit, not just rebound growth; and agentic AI booking could commoditise the search box.
Funding
- Raised: $300M financing round in September 2022 (INA, BlackRock, Allianz Global Investors, Orion Capital Asia); earlier backing from GIC, Qatar Investment Authority, Expedia and East Ventures.
- Valuation: private — reported IPO target of $5–6B (Digital in Asia, Jun 2026); no confirmed valuation to report.
Latest — June 2026
Traveloka is weighing an IPO at a $5–6 billion valuation with no firm date set, as Asia-Pacific travel heads toward a $555 billion market by 2027 and regional peers Klook and OYO race to list alongside it.
