  1. The Bottleneck

    What was broken?

Companies knew AI could solve their problems but had no idea where to start: the technology was trapped behind a skills gap, and only the biggest tech firms could connect with AI talent or put models to use.

  2. The Move

    Why it worked

A unified marketplace plus no-code tooling — customers turn pre-made datasets and pre-vetted models into custom solutions without code, or hire AI creators on the platform; suppliers benchmark and sell datasets and models to them.

  3. The Trap

    Battle scars

Competing with hyperscalers and well-funded agent startups in a fast-moving market; proving real-world agent performance; monetising across regions with uneven AI readiness.

The problem

Most companies could see that AI was the answer to their business problems but had no idea where to start. The technology was trapped behind a historic skills gap: a new generation of AI practitioners was emerging on every continent, yet only the biggest tech companies could find them, hire them, or put their skills to use.

How it works

Founded in 2020 by Syrian-American machine-learning veteran Hassan Sawaf — who previously headed AI divisions at eBay, Amazon Web Services and Facebook — aiXplain is a collaborative marketplace for AI development. Customers turn pre-made datasets and pre-vetted models into custom solutions without writing code, or team up with AI creators; suppliers of datasets and models sell to them and use built-in benchmarking tools to improve their offerings. Its “super agent” Bel Esprit lets non-technical users describe what they need in plain language and get working AI apps and agents, with a model marketplace and evaluation system to pick the right model per use case. Almost half of its customers are based in the Middle East.

Pain points

AI locked behind expertise; executives unable to reach AI talent; no practical path from chatbot experiments to agents that take action — and most platforms under-serving Arabic and its dialects.

Business model

Pay-as-you-go AI development: users pay to build, benchmark and deploy solutions, while the platform takes its cut connecting enterprise demand with creators and suppliers of models, datasets and pipelines.

Challenges

Hyperscalers and a stampede of agent startups are racing the same opportunity; real-world agent reliability is still unproven; and expanding across regions with very different AI readiness takes sustained enterprise selling.

Funding

  • Raised: $6.5M pre-Series A led by Wa’ed Ventures, Aramco’s venture arm — its first US AI investment — bringing total funding to $16.5M (Jul 2024). The company was already profitable the previous year.
  • Previously: an $8M round in 2023 and an early round led by Transform VC after more than a year in stealth, with a private beta from 2021.

Latest — July 2024

On 17 July 2024 Axios reported Wa’ed Ventures’ $6.5M pre-Series A into San Francisco-based aiXplain to expand operations and push generative AI from chatbots into action-taking agents with better Arabic representation.
