  1. The Bottleneck

    What was broken?

Damascus restaurants and shops had no way to reach customers ordering from their phones — no local delivery platform existed, and smartphones were barely used beyond Facebook and WhatsApp.

  2. The Move

    Why it worked

First mover in an empty market: BeeOrder signed up restaurants (even convincing them to install WiFi for voucher campaigns), ran its own courier fulfilment, and became the default ordering habit — described a decade later as the backbone of food and grocery delivery in Syria.

  3. The Trap

    Battle scars

Building through war, sanctions and a collapsed banking system; operating under the Assad government while concealing basic business data; patchy connectivity and cash-only logistics.

The problem

In 2016 Damascus had restaurants, hungry customers and 3G internet — but no way to connect them. No local food-delivery platform existed, smartphones were used almost exclusively for Facebook and WhatsApp, and shops had no digital storefront, no delivery fleet and no online payments.

How it works

Founded by Abdel Malek Al-Mouzayen and Hadi Nahas, BeeOrder launched in Damascus around September 2016 as Syria’s first food-ordering platform. Customers order meals and groceries from local restaurants and shops through the app, and BeeOrder’s courier network delivers across the city. The founders did the unglamorous groundwork themselves — persuading cafes and restaurants to install WiFi by demonstrating how vouchers and discounts bring in customers. Over the years the product broadened into a delivery super app spanning food, grocery and digital services.

Pain points

Zero online-ordering habit to build on, restaurants with no digital presence, unreliable connectivity, a collapsed banking system forcing everything onto cash, and the overhead of running a courier fleet in a war economy.

Business model

Delivery marketplace: BeeOrder earns commissions from partner restaurants and shops plus delivery fees, using vouchers and discounts to build ordering volume on both sides.

Challenges

BeeOrder was built through war, sanctions and regime change — working around a collapsed banking system and, under the Assad government, concealing basic business data to survive. Its CEO later described the experience as doing business in hiding, appearing on The Riyal Deal at LEAP in Riyadh to tell the story.

Funding

  • The co-founders spent around $150,000 of their own investment building the app through five versions with a team of 20 designers and programmers (Entrepreneur, Feb 2017). No institutional round is publicly documented.

Latest — February 2017

Shortly after launch BeeOrder reported 5,000 active users covering the west and north of Damascus — around half the city — and set a target of 30,000 users and full-city coverage by the end of 2017. A decade on, Arzan VC’s ecosystem review still calls it the backbone of food and grocery delivery in Syria.
