  1. The Bottleneck

    What was broken?

Blind students get study material through a slow volunteer-transcription chain into braille displays costing upwards of $5,000 — pricing most of the world's blind community out of digital content.

  2. The Move

    Why it worked

A cheap, portable braille cell that pairs with phones over Bluetooth, wrapped in a software library of braille lessons and games — education and entertainment on hardware students can actually afford.

  3. The Trap

    Battle scars

Hardware margins and manufacturing scale; distribution across schools and disability institutions country by country; and keeping the app library fresh enough to hold young users.

The problem

Co-founder Abdelrazek Aly broke his hand as a Qatar University engineering student and, seeking help at the special-needs centre, met a blind law student waiting on volunteers to transcribe lectures into a format his $5,000 braille display could read. That three-step chain — professor to volunteer to expensive hardware — is how most blind students still get their education.

How it works

Bonocle is a portable handheld with a braille cell that pairs with everyday smartphones over Bluetooth, translating digital content into touch on the spot. Around it sits a learning and entertainment library: apps for the braille alphabet, spelling, maths, and chemistry, plus board games, platformers, action-adventure, and puzzle titles — including work showcased for visually impaired fans during the World Cup.

Pain points

Transcription delays that leave blind students weeks behind, hardware priced for institutions instead of people, and braille tools that feel like medical equipment rather than something a teenager would pick up.

Business model

Affordable device sales to individuals — the first batches sold in Qatar — plus institutional deals with schools and accessibility centres, with the software library deepening the product over time.

Challenges

Consumer hardware economics at small volumes, country-by-country deals with education systems, and the content treadmill of keeping learning apps and games engaging.

Funding

  • Raised: $1M in combined grants and investments at seed close, from angels including Dharmendra Ghai, Fatima Al Kuwari, and Faraj Abdulla plus grants from QSTP, the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, and Mada (Rasmal, June 2023).

Latest — May 2025

Bonocle was listed among Doha’s startups to watch with a seed stage, ~$1.1M total funding, and impact expanded to over 200 students (Arageek, updated May 2025).
