The problem
Iranian local merchants — restaurants, spas, theatres, pools — had no affordable online channel to fill empty seats, and shoppers had no trusted single destination for vetted local discounts. Global deals platforms never entered the market, leaving the space wide open.
How it works
Founded in 2010 by ex-software developer Nazanin Daneshvar, Takhfifan began as a Groupon clone listing time-limited discounted deals from local merchants, which shoppers buy as vouchers and redeem offline. Daneshvar had previously founded Meydoonak.com, Iran’s first online grocery delivery platform. Over time Takhfifan grew beyond group-buying into a fintech and lendtech platform, connecting millions of customers with offline retailers through digital payment solutions and marketing tools.
Pain points
Merchants invisible without costly marketing, shoppers wary of unknown sellers, cash-heavy offline redemption habits, and a thin services-e-commerce infrastructure.
Business model
Deals-marketplace commission on every discounted voucher sold, extended into fintech and lendtech revenue from payment solutions and marketing tools for offline retailers.
Challenges
A three-year negotiation with NetBarg over valuation and legal complexities before the merger, the operational work of integrating a rival’s merchants, digitising cash-heavy retailers, and building consumer fintech under sanctions — compounded early on by the scepticism Daneshvar faced as a rare female founder.
Funding
No publicly cited funding round was found in the inspected sources for Takhfifan; its landmark 2019 combination with NetBarg was brokered by equity firm Sarava Pars with the combined company operating under Sarava.
Latest — Dec 2019
On 27 December 2019 the Financial Tribune reported that Takhfifan and NetBarg, two major Iranian e-commerce platforms selling products and services at reduced prices, had signed a merger and acquisition deal hammered out by equity firm Sarava Pars, with Takhfifan CEO Nazanin Daneshvar citing three years of negotiations. MENA Digital News later profiled the completed 2020 acquisition of NetBarg as sealing Takhfifan’s dominance of Iran’s deal and group-buying market.
